The tipping point tends to land somewhere around five to ten bulbs. It is not a hard rule, because it depends on the router, but that is where the tone of owner reports changes.
What actually differs
A Wi-Fi bulb talks straight to your router, like your phone does. Each one takes an address, holds a connection open, and polls the manufacturer’s cloud even while idle. One or two, nobody notices. Wi-Fi uses wide channels, Zigbee uses narrow ones, and when they overlap Zigbee is the one that loses, because it recovers poorly from collisions. The fix is picking a Zigbee channel well away from your Wi-Fi channel. Replacing the switch with a smart one, or putting a relay module behind it, ends that permanently and often costs less than replacing five bulbs. The catch is electrical: nearly all of them need a neutral wire in the box, and older houses frequently do not have one.

Does Zigbee work without internet?
It does. The hub controls the bulbs inside the house, so physical switches, scenes and automations keep responding with the internet down. Only remote access and voice assistant integration stop. Cloud-dependent Wi-Fi bulbs typically lose more in the same situation.
Do I really need a hub for Zigbee?
Yes, Zigbee does not talk to your router. You need a coordinator, either the brand's own hub or an Echo with a built-in Zigbee radio, depending on the model. That cost belongs in the comparison: a Zigbee bulb on its own does nothing.
Can I mix Wi-Fi and Zigbee bulbs in the same house?
