A bad power bank is one that sits in a drawer because it takes longer to charge than your phone lasts. The gap between a mediocre one and a good one comes down to two numbers: capacity (mAh) and output power (W).

Capacity vs. portability: the real trade-off

More capacity means more weight, more bulk, and a longer wait when the bank itself needs charging. Before defaulting to the biggest number, think about how you’ll actually use it:

The complaints are about living with it. The built-in cable is short enough that the phone has to sit attached to the brick, and on the retractable-cable versions reviewers report output dropping off as the pack warms up. One caveat about the star ratings on this category generally: a large share of the positive reviews on retailer sites are explicitly incentivised, and many are written after two weeks of ownership, which is not long enough to catch battery degradation.

The INIU 20,000 mAh draws mild criticism rather than serious complaints. It charges ultrabooks and MacBook Airs well, less impressively a power-hungry laptop under load, and it stays around body temperature in use. The recurring gripes are bulk, a percentage display that owners have measured drifting by 10 points or more, and recharge time that depends far more on the wall charger you own than on the pack. Worth knowing before a trip: reports say it does not comply with China’s newer power bank rules for flights.

The Anker 621 MagGo disappoints exactly one type of buyer: whoever expects it to replace a proper power bank. Anker’s own documentation calls the wireless charging slow, it cannot run the cable and the magnetic side at the same time, and 5,000 mAh is one phone top-up. Does Power Delivery really charge faster?
